Dear DPK: We apologize for the confusion caused by our actions here at the paper. Originally, the Raleigh Downtowner, which purchased the Chronicle, was going to simply forward the Raleigh2.com domain to the Downtowner website and start doing online content of their own. As such, The Raleigh Chronicle would have been effectively shut down.

However, after receiving comments from readers and after careful consideration, the Raleigh Downtowner decided to keep the Raleigh Chronicle as a separate name, entity, and website to keep traffic up and to keep the same technology platform used by the Chronicle.

Again, we apologize for the mixed messages on our part, but keeping the Raleigh Chronicle open as a separate entity was decided to be the most beneficial move in the long run, but that decision was made after our original posting.

Thank you for your support (and we really appreciate the comments from GoGoRaleigh.com) and we hope that you will continue to read both the Chroncile and the Downtowner editions. We feel that locally-run blogs and locally-owned media are vital to any community.

It also appears they have now removed the original post all together and are playing it off like nothing happened. Sketchy.

Ah! Good point. They have changed their article since I posted this news. Their original article said,"After serving over a million readers in the Raleigh community, the locally owned Raleigh Chronicle will close on Tuesday, as another newspaper purchases the publication."

They have since removed the word "close". They also have no update today about what is going on.

Not really what the article on their homepage said. Shutting down and being published by a new owner are not the same thing.
