Sidetrack Becomes Boylan Bridge Brewpub

boylanbridg One of downtown’s projects we’ve all been anticipating for a while has a new name. The Sidetrack Brewpub, which has chronicled its creation on its website, got a cease-and-desist letter this week from a Chicago lawyer. Apparently someone has acquired a trademark on the word “Sidetrack”.

The new name will be The Boylan Bridge Brewpub, and the new website, under construction, will be boylanbridge.com.

Mini Page Founder Steps Down

minipage It all started back in 1969 when Betty Debnam began publishing “The Mini Page” for Raleigh’s News & Observer. Its popularity grew so much that in 1976, Universal Press Syndicate began the page’s distribution. Eventually over 500 newspapers carried “The Mini Page” and its many explanations of current events and science, puzzles, and games for children.

Last month, Debnam stepped down from her editor post, and will focus more time on writing children’s books, painting, and developing the Debnam-Hunt Literacy Resource Center at ECU.

Drought Status Downgraded

Yesterday’s update the on the region’s drought status resulted in a return to drought level 1, “Moderate”, for most of Wake County for the first time in many, many months. The drought status peaked at “Exceptional” during the winter, and still has a little further to go before returning to “Normal”. This is perhaps the most reasonable of the excuses for the City of Raleigh’s hanging on to Stage 1 water restrictions. My prediction is that these restrictions will be in effect until at least 2010 when the new watershed opens and/or a new mayor is elected.

Does anyone think that drought class names sound a lot like adjectives on the Applebee’s menu? The drought was “extreme” at one time, was later downgraded to “zesty” before reaching its current “downright tasty” status.
