222 Glenwood Pool Courtyard Nearly Complete

Some photos were sent to me by a very nice person showing the central courtyard/pool area of the nearly-completed 222 Glenwood condo building. Any thoughts?

just as eerie as the pool/courtyard at the north hills alexan apartments. can’t say i’m a fan of this. thank you for the pictures, though.

I can’t say I’m a fan either… thats awful. Not a surprise though. It looks like a pool at a bad hotel, just kinda crammed in there. Brings to mind… when was the last time anyone saw the pool at the Clarion downtown in operation? Another opportunity lost.

How else do you do it? A roof top pool would be really cool but I’m not sure what the cost/ maintenance/ insurance would be like then.

Not sure how else to do it now, but considering this building was made *from scratch* I’m sure they could have done something much better. After all, the pool was not an afterthought the way that it appears in those pictures. The design and layout of the entire building and deck should have been different from the outset. This thing looks horrible. The painted-on windows on the parking deck are… no words fitting to describe them. I am glad that my wife and I chose to look elsewhere when we were considering 222 as our new residence. I am not one to complain about these sorts of things (I am very glad people are finally moving into downtown, and that there is a demand), but there is nothing architecturally aesthetic about 222 at all. The only plus I see is they are providing ground level storefronts. And bringing more people to Glenwood South. I just wish someone would have been more progressive with the design.

There are a few things that could have been done differently. First off, I would have put the pool on top of the parking garage. This pool won’t see the light of day, literally. Plus, those who don’t have perfect figures will feel like they are on-stage when they are by this pool.

What to do with the courtyard? Well, it could still have been a neat garden with a water feature; basically a living room for the complex. Maybe even put in shuffleboard or croquet on astroturf – something fun. That parking deck wall would work better being a stepback terrace kind of thing, with planters all the way up. If the wall had some occasional ivy type plants, or even an artistic mural, it would make the space fun and warm.

I agree that the pool area does not look like a place to hang out and relax. Far from it. But I do think that one good thing about the pool is that it looks like you could actually do some decent laps in the two lanes. Since I swim laps often, as a place to live that would be better than a pool that was more like a resort, but not good for laps. I still would not want to live in 222, but I thought that it was notable.

I was one of those that purchased a unit at 222 about 2 years ago. Back then I wondered how the pool would work sandwiched between the residences & parking garage. I even asked that question and was told that ‘sun studies have been done to ensure sunlight’ wow.
There may be an hour or two that actual direct sunlight can get to it, otherwise you’ll be in the shade.
And as other comments state – it will be a little eerie to feel like the focal point of all the balconies that protude over. Prediction: not much pool usage.
The Paramount has a rooftop pool. The West at North does too. Agree that pool should have went on top of deck w/ nice garden area in center. How could lay people have seen this and the architects not seen this?

David W: the term “architects” should be used there lightly. most design oriented architects in practice right now find 222 to be one of the more offensive buildings being constructed right now. and this is among a long and growing list of bad raleigh buildings.
to give the “architects” some credit…. they were probably forced into this pool situation by the money hungry developer wanting to sell the units. they wanted to say they had a pool, but didn’t want to spend the money to put it in a better location. however, on the website for the building there is a photograph (99% sure it’s not a rendering) that shows the pool in full sun. sun or no sun, it still feels like a bad hotel.
but seriously… this building is awful. the pool is just another example of just how bad it really is…
