Prepare for More Roundabouts

In 2003 a roundabout was placed at the Pullen Road/Stinson Drive intersection. Since that point Stinson traffic has had a much easier time moving onto Pullen with only a minor inconvenience to Pullen’s thru-traffic. Today’s article in the News & Observer explains many of the intersection’s successes. Safety has drastically improved, with a three-year tally of crashes falling from twelve before the roundabout implementation to three afterward. These crashes, too, were at slow speeds. With traffic flow being relatively unmarred, the successes of these 1-lane roundabouts will be the seed for many more such intersections to come.

    WOO!

Intersections that make people think cause less accidents!! Who’d have thought?

“Safety has drastically improved, with a three-year tally of crashes falling from twelve before the roundabout implementation to three afterward.”

Eh, maybe reported accidents… but I’ve definitely seen quite my share of bumper-to-bumper b/c of overly-cautious round-a-bouters… I’ve even embarrassingly enough been in my own. But, at 5 miles an hour, the damage is minimal enough (if at all) to exchange phone numbers and go about your day.

The only real beef I have about roundabouts is that it seems 90% of drivers in this state don’t know how to properly use them.
This is another area where Driver’s Education in NC is behind the times and still very rural-driving-based. (The other is the lack of instructions on how to parallel park.)

What is taking so long to build them? We have been talking about this for years – just do it – one thing I have experienced for years in the Triangle – progress is too slow.

Roundabouts are simple to manuever(from experience on Hilton Head – couple times through the circle and your experienced – we are an educated area – come on folks, this is not brain surgery)

“Look kids! Big Ben…Parliment!” Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Roundabouts are great but you’re right in that not many people know their roundabout signalling. When you are in one and you are exiting at the next opportunity, you turn on your right turn signal. If however you are not, you should have your left signal turned on until it is time to switch to the right. This alerts the drivers waiting to enter as to your intentions.

So much for that idiot Isley who claimed roundabouts served no purpose.

I built a roundabout between my kitchen, living room, and hallway. I’ve noticed a drastic decrease in the number of times I accidentally step on the dog. Bravo Raleigh.

When I bought my house, I noticed a curious concrete roundabout with an indistinct bush in the middle. So I tore the bush out, built a firepit instead, and now the space is perfect for trike races!

Last time I was on a roundabout, I couldn’t ever get right. Sorry TSnow, I had to as well.

Roundabouts are great, and for those worried about driver education, do some educating! I blast my horn every time someone stops at a roundabout for no reason.
