Jibarra is just a little ahead of Raleigh’s palate, as Bob suggests, but I am sure it will make it. Tasca Brava made the same move this year and the Agasi’s made the same North Raleigh to downtown move a few years back (Butterflies to Zely&Ritz)… both of those were respected but just could not draw enough traffic.

Restaurants that are “quite popular” and that are not in any trouble, do not close their location and move away.

The restaurant was not making enough money and was in trouble. It will have similar problems at its new locataion. I stand by my comments.

Jibarra is a good restaurant. However, that will not save it.

It is not a question of trendiness. It is a question of the local palate. Unfortunately, most folks — be they inside the beltline or in North Raleigh — do not appreciate real Mexican food. They want the Americanized fodder that the “Mexican” restaurants here serve. Therefore, I do not believe that Jibarra will be a viable enterprise its new location.

Boy! North Raleigh is a tough area for decent restaurants. We even went to the El Rodeo Grill last night at 7pm and it was half empty. Y’all get out and eat in these unique places or we’ll lose them!!

^Bob, they did make it in their location. From what I hear, they were quite popular.
Every article I read is that they’re moving downtown because it’s a location that fits their type of trendy, unique food better.

If they couldn’t make it at their old location, it is doubtful that they will make it at their new location. In 5 years, we wont remember Jibarra.

Lisa took the words from my mouth. For any new restaurant opening during these times, offering stuff that’s affordable to most people will definitely help fill the seats! (Even for a place like Jibarra with such a good reputation.)
