Planning Commissions Advises More Spaces for Broughton

The Planning Commission today approved a plan for 100 additional parking spaces on the front lawn of Broughton High School. The school had eariler requested 126 spaces in their original plan.

They also recommended returning “The Strip” (Cameron Street section across from the baseball field) to the Wake County Public School System. Such control would afford the school to return The Strip to 90-degree parking, adding back 30 previously deleted spaces.

Its amazing to me that one of the largest cause of carbon emmissions is automobile exhaust primarily in the U.S. and kids are taught this ad nauseum; however, the powers that be encourage car usage-hypocrites. These kids should be bused rather than allowing more parking spaces to be built.

How are students to participate in sports, band, chorus, drama, student government committees, after school jobs, college release programs, etc if they have to rely on a bus?
A bigger step in reducing carbon emissions would be to scrap the magnet programs so that more students in natural districts could go to their closest school.

I hope the new plan still calls for an additional entrance to the lot from Peace Street. The traffic on St. Mary’s when all the students are arriving is terrible!
