Raleigh Times Unveils New Menu

Times_reuben Today the Raleigh Times rolled out the third generation of their menu (.pdf). Prices in few case are only nominally higher, and about 20% of the menu has been replaced.

Version 3.0 of the Raleigh Times menu drops the Italian Hoagie and adds a Cuban (pork loin) sandwich as well as a grilled chicken and bleu cheese sandwich. The Kielbasa dish is mercifully gone as is the Shrimp & Grits. New replacements are both Blackened Salmon and delicious sounding Chimichurri pork ribs. The salad lineup has been greatly overhauled once again. Gone are the Boston Bibb as well as the Grilled Asparagus & Roasted Tomato. In are Wilted Spinach, Greek, and House (mixed greens) Salads. Another improvement is the apparent availability of all items throughout the entire day (Raleigh’s best guacamole at lunch!)

Watching the evolution of a menu through chef changes is an interesting art. I was not a fan of the second menu. I thought that the salad changes were most unfortunate and some of the new additions weren’t very good. The second menu dropped the original, Ashley Christensen era offerings of the Pimiento Cheese Wrap, Wedge Salad (get me a Kleenex), Caesar Salad, and Arugula Salad. It added French Dip, Shrimp & Grits, Calamari, Fish & Chips, Cannellini Bean Cakes, Grilled Asparagus and Roasted Tomato Salad, and the Boston Bibb Salad. The items in italics did not survive the cut for today’s menu change.

The Raleigh Times still offers their phenomenal burger, Raleigh’s best. The price has only gone up by 3% since the restaurant opened just over three years ago.

i do miss the bibb salad

  • dmwcpa

Is their guacamole that good? I need to give it a try. Is it better than Cafe Capistrano’s?

  • LC

While I agree that in the past their burger has been very good, the last number of times I’ve been there it was overcooked, dry and disappointing. However, the pork nachos have always been spot on.

Prices at this place for lunch are a joke (look at the picture of that sandwich (and it is smaller in person for almost $10 with a drink). McAllister’s is a better bargain (sandwich, side and drink for around $7 and the sandwich is double the size of Raleigh Times). Ate lunch at Times once, that was enough!

    Nick,
I should say, as the photographer of the picture, that the Reuben is plenty big, even for my voracious appetite. Maybe I just didn’t get a good angle on it!
On the other hand, I didn’t particularly like the reuben. It was kind of bland, and yes, my sandwich and a Coke was $12 after tip. No chips, no fries; just the delicious little bean salad pictured. I really think the RT is a great option for dinner.
Though I can’t say that McAllister’s is a good alternative! I wish I liked that restaurant, but it doesn’t do a thing for me.

The comment about the guacamole being Raleighs best(at lunch or any other time) is laughable. I’m a big fan or The Times and their food. I have been promoting and talking about their food since day 1. While the Guac is good..it’s just that..good–not great! On top of that it’s hit or miss…most of the time being on the short side while hidden with a little pico on top. If you want good Guac go to Jibarra. If you want the worlds best pickle chips, raleighs best burger..go to the times.

I must admit that I haven’t been to the Times much since Ashley Christensen left. Every time I’ve had the guacamole it was outstanding. Jibarra’s is good, but it gets points off for using lime juice.

Lime juice..no lime juice..its flat out better. Forget better..its just good.

I’d be willing to bet that the times uses lime juice these days too.

I’m an enormous fan of the times..but their food has dipped in the past yr or more. I find myself ordering the pork nachos less and less..actually, not at all…I used to covet it..often talking about it outside of the restaurant. In the time since Ashley left, I have slowly whittled down the menu(in my mind) as to what is worth ordering. I still love the place and some of the menu items..I am, though, looking forward to trying the cuban and a few other things.

Who mentioned McAlister’s??? Can we ban this person? haha

  • David

    Not worth the change.

What is worth the dough, Dana, is Fat Tire beer, now being served along with its darker cousin, 1554, at the Flying Saucer.

  • WW

While its nice that Fat Tire is now being served in this part of the country, its still an average, run of the mill brew when compared to other craft brewed ales. I imagine it will get many folks in this area pretty excited but its considered pretty average in other parts of the country.
