Heels Win From the Line
Tonight’s game at Virginia Tech was ultimately not important to the standings (UNC still in all likelihood still has to beat Duke to win the regular season), but was important to see how the UNC offense is coming along. In short:
- Heels scored 0.96 points per possession (goal is .95)
- Heels forced 0.91 pts per ****. (goal is .85) – Not great defense
- Heels turned it over on 9% of possessions. VT turned it over on 13%
- Both teams shot 41% from the field. We made 26 free throws, VT made 17.
SO… UNC scored at an efficient rate, but DID NOT PLAY GOOD DEFENSE, yet still won by 8. Point being that UNC’s OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY has much more to do with winning than their defense.
This makes two straight games above 0.95 points per possession, the first such streak in over a month. The bad news: UNC hasn’t put a three-game streak together since the @UVA/Miami/Clemson. Odds are that the Heels are due for a sub 0.90 offensive game. The good news is that next up is a Duke team that is really hobbled by injuries and hasn’t played very well since the last meeting. While they are going with unconventional lineups, they are handling the ball well. The key is containing Henderson. He is at the top of his game and has no injuries…oh wait. I thought Duke didn’t talk about their injuries.
Crabtree Installs Dangerous Flooring
Crabtree Valley Mall executed a massive renovation about 15 years ago. Apparently the flooring in the Pavilion (food court) was worn, so the mall is replacing it. Unfortunately it is the slickest tile I’ve ever seen in a public place. The flooring is only partially installed, but should be aborted immediately because someone is going to fall and get seriously hurt.
Several years ago we witnessed a fairly old lady falling and breaking her hip in the old North Hills Mall. Her life (and her husband’s life) forever changed, the nice old couple was not litigious, but that was then. Certainly the mall’s risk management consultants (ie. “lawyers”) would agree with me. Be careful out there.

Scott Crawford Named Executive Chef At Herons
The today introduced Scott Crawford as Executive Chef of its signature restaurant, . Known for his refined American cooking, Crawford comes to The Umstead from The Georgian Room at The Cloister Hotel at Sea Island, Georgia, a Mobil Travel Guide Five-Star awarded restaurant.
"Crawford brings exceptional culinary talent, experience leading two five-star dining rooms, and proven professionalism to our luxury property," says General Manager, Jim Beley. "We’re confident that in Crawford’s hands our entire food and beverage program will be reinvigorated, reflecting our commitment to superior quality in product, presentation, service and concept; and furthermore, that Crawford will fulfill owner Ann Goodnight’s vision for Herons to be a beacon for food-savvy travelers and local diners alike.”
Crawford, a graduate of the American Culinary Academy in Tampa, Florida, enjoyed stints in his early career with chef Norman Van Aken at Norman’s in Miami and at the Black Cat in San Francisco before joining The Ritz Carlton’s Amelia Island Resort as their Chef de Cuisine, first of Café 4750, then in 2001 as Chef de Cuisine of their AAA Five-Diamond awarded dining room.
In 2004, Crawford earned Five-Stars from Mobil Travel Guide for his regional American cooking as Executive Chef of Woodlands Resort & Inn, the Relais & Chateaux property and Gourmand Dining Room located in Summerville, SC, before being hired away in 2006 to his most recent post as Executive Chef of The Georgian Room at The Cloister Hotel in Sea Island, Georgia. There, Crawford’s coastal Georgian cuisine earned critical praise, including five coveted stars from Mobil Travel Guide, “Best New Restaurant” in Esquire Magazine, and Wine Spectator featured it saying, “Crawford’s style of haute cuisine is buoyed by regional flavors and based on produce gleaned from small, area farms…”
When asked about his new position, Crawford explained, "This is a unique opportunity to create an authentic food and wine experience that reflects this spectacular contemporary hotel in North Carolina, and such a diverse and agriculturally rich area.” Crawford, whose first menu will be available in late Spring, explained “I believe in the chef-farmer concept — the importance of bringing together the nearby farmer who has a passion for organic produce or farm-raised meats with the chef who has a passion for optimizing rather than masking their natural flavors; this will be one of our priorities at Herons."
