2012: The Endangered List

Now that we are done looking in the rearview mirror, it’s time to focus on the year ahead. Each year new ideas and businesses bloom while other find themselves caught in inescapable traps. Some fall prey to bad locations, others to market redundancy, poor product, or poor service. Others are just obsolete.

In 2012 there will be some surprising big box store closings. There has been a concerted effort in previous years to buy local and shun the big boxes. However in 2012, larger market forces instead of grassroots organizations will probably be what shuts the doors for some of these outlets.

Here is a look ahead at the list of retail and restaurant businesses that have an aura of danger according to this one man’s senses (in no particular order, and no wishes associated):

  • Best Buy
  • Kmart
  • Salsarita’s
  • Taco Bell
  • Dillard’s
  • A.C. Moore
  • Jibarra or Cantina South
  • OfficeMax and Office Depot
  • Cinelli’s (North Hills)
  • QShack (North Hills)
  • Fresh Market (Cameron Village)
  • Charlotte’s (North Hills)
  • Fiesta Mexicana
  • Applebee’s (A few locations)
  • Nowell’s
  • Sam Ash or Guitar Center
  • McCormick and Schmick’s
  • Barnes & Noble (not all locations)
  • The news staff at NBC17

Any thoughts or additions?

1/5/12 – Here are some more for the list:

  • Radio Shack
  • Pronto Pasta
  • Bear Rock (Lake Boone)

1/16/12 – I completely forgot to add this one, but the last time I was in there the store was about 70% empty:

  • Blockbuster Video – Townridge Square

I don’t mean to pick on these merchants, but if I had a gift certificate or significant savings coupon for any of these, I would probably go ahead and use them sooner than later.

Do you have any insider info on the Fresh Market at Cameron Village? Because it’s packed every time I’m there!

  • Dana

I’m glad to hear that, Jenna. I have not been much, but when I have it has been desolate in there. No insider info, just a feeling that Whole Foods is bound to make a move for a bigger store ITB (given that their Wade Ave store is now woeful compared to N. Raleigh and Cary). I don’t know if the plan is to take over more of Ridgewood or just move altogether, but I feel that Whole Foods is in the driver’s seat and Fresh Market is stuck with a small, outdated (’80′s chic) store and nowhere to go. That coupled with Harris Teeter expanding their space makes FM the odd-man out.

  • Johnspq

Sounds like a fair assessment to me. @johnspq

  • DougInNC

Radio Shack stores and Post Offices are likely to decline in number.

  • Coolakhani

I would be upset if the Cameron Village Fresh Market closed…it’s always packed when I’m there, too, and I hate the Harris Teeter in CV (the parking is so awful) and always chose the Fresh Market for a quick grocery store stop.

  • Mtn2sea11

Sounds like a hate list more than an endangered list to me.

  • Doug

Any idea what’s going on with the Ridgewood expansion? Where do you think WF would move ITB? As for Cameron Village, “nobody goes there anymore – it’s too crowded.” :)

  • Dana

I don’t like Applebee’s and Kmart. The rest of the stores are ones I hope stay in business. However you go in places and there is NOBODY there or you see redundancy, or you see a very outdated store that has overwhelming competition. Retail is all about what you’ve done for me lately. A 65 year old client base doesn’t keep a store open, and business have to constantly change.

We will see many stores closing this year. The purpose of this entry is to identify which ones are most likely to be the ones that close. Did you see OfficeMax in Cary closing? Looking at their house brand inventory and dearth of customers, it isn’t a surprise that they closed, and I will miss them.

I had this feeling about Restoration Hardware a year ago (I’m sure you read the article). They were doing poorly nationally coupled with some really bad design moves. Sure enough, Raleigh loses its store (as well as many other cities).

A little rumor is going around that Try Sports at Crabtree is on the verge of closing. They have closed their bike store and hardly anyone is in there. It looks Crabtree is going to have some vacancies in the spring, but I am sure they have already attracted tenants. I’ve heard there is somewhat of a waiting list to get a lease there.

  • Madisonj1

good riddance to restoration hardware. they lost their cool status years ago when they switched to this new style of store. not sure who was in charge of that, but epic fail as far as i’m concerned. i used to shop in there quite a bit, i miss the old store.

  • Dana

Interesting. They are in a _terrible_location. I think all of these offshoot hallways are a recipe for disaster. I really wish that a Nordstrom plan could have worked for either that space or a mall expansion over the creek to the Brendle’s area. Of course, I included Kmart, but that doesn’t mean that Sears is sitting pretty. To be honest, they need to split those stores up…maybe putting all of the clothes and home furnishings in the malls and the sporting goods and hardware in the strip shopping centers. Nevertheless, if Sears pulls out, it would be a perfect space for Nordstrom (assuming Nordstrom is interested in expanding). When are these stores going to realize that a SouthPoint store doesn’t get ANY Raleigh traffic? But I digress… :)

  • Subwayscoundrel

I need to think about this but I will offer a possibility. THis place would close due to bad management as I think many of their business customers go once and do not go back. I know of one big employer who spent $2K there one night but doubt they will go back and made the comment so. Bar service was just too bad for a business outing. Plus I always feel like there is no bar management there as I wait for service and see 4 people behind the bar slacking and talking. I say this as no telling how much money walks out the door every night that should be in their cash registers.

    Dana,

Just curious how Fiesta Mexicana ended up on this list. Are you talking about all of their locations, or a specific one? I frequent the one in Cary quite often and it’s always pretty packed around lunch time. Plus, it seems to be one of those places anyone who’s worked in Cary is at least familiar with, if not in love with. And sometimes, you get your food even faster than if you were to go to Taco Bell.

  • Wswynne

Southpoint is a nice mall, but agree, no one that I know from Raleigh shops there on a regular basis. If it weren’t for the destination stores like urban outfitters and Nordstrom, etc, then I would never go there. And yet for some reason crabtree is losing a lot of its mainstays to Southpoint….but that’s for another day.

Speaking of endangered retail spaces, there seems to be a lot of stores at North Hills that are pretty empty…especially in the Renaissance corridor. I wonder what is keeping them alive with such high rents and low traffic.

  • Rabbitlunch

for the most part, this list wouldn’t impact my life much, I do like Jibarra, but the location is kind of invisible

  • Bacchianm

Please could u share how you developed this list? I know KMart is in trouble and Best Buy has just been listed as in serious trouble in a few years, but how did you come up with all of these local stores in trouble? Or is it just your wish list they would go away?

Please see my response to Mtn2sea11 below. Your final question is addressed in the post.

Stopped in to Lake Boone Bear Rock about a week ago and its deli case was empty of anything except some plastic decoration, all the previous outdoorsy decor has been removed, the laminate was broken up in several places and chairs were all worn out. As someone who worked for Hickory Hams (BR’s early incarnation) back in the day and enjoyed BR in its hey day, it was downright depressing. The food itself was pretty bad as well. My wife said “It looks like they’ve given up in here and are just waiting to close”. I couldn’t disagree.

  • Ceedee

I agree with almost all your predicitons. I’m hoping you’re wrong about Fresh Market because I enjoy shopping there. However, I’m most surprised about Charlotte’s in NH. (or if you were to say CV…but you didn’t) But I swear those 2 stores get more foot traffic than any gift store I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing as to what she sells and what people pay… I thought she had the midas touch in picking her merchandise and selling them for a very big mark-up. I’ve seen her many times at Market in Atlanta and knows what she buys a lot of her things for.

    “QShack (North Hills)”

Any inside info on this one or just a gut feeling? For North Raleigh BBQ, there aren’t many/any other options (that I know of) and I find the place pretty damn tasty as well!

No…just a feeling. There isn’t ever anyone in there when I go. I really like their pulled chicken sandwich.
