WRAL to Test MPH Mobile DTV Device
Engadget HD is reporting that WRAL is already testing the ATSC-compatible MPH mobile television transmission system. This will allow local digital over-the-air signals to devices such as cellphones, portable TVs, and laptops. The signal apparently will work in moving cars and transit vehicles, too.
The article also mentions that the Raleigh/Durham and Las Vegas markets will be the first to test the new DVB-SH standard . This standard allows for IP-based content and data to handhelds using a hybrid satellite/terrestrial connection.
February 17 is Glen Wesley Night
The only original Carolina Hurricane will have his “#2” jersey raised to the rafters at the RBC Center before the February 17 game against Boston.
Marshall Tucker Band Coming to Buckhead Saloon
Today’s music announcement begs these questions: Can Southern Rock bands be “legendary” without naming themselves after a non-band member? How about losing key band members to car crashes and disease throughout its history? Can the remaining members put a group together with new guys and still hit the road? The answer to those is emphatically YEAH, MAN!
It’s been 28 years since Spartanburg’s Marshall Tucker Band lost Tommy Caldwell to an auto crash. Toy Caldwell died in ’93 from heart disease, and George McCorkle succumbed to cancer last summer, but by golly, the band survives. See them at the Buckhead Saloon on September 13.
Note: Typos finally corrected. Thanks Jed!

Hurricanes ’09 Schedule for Your PDA
Canes hockey fans who like electronic calendars rejoice! I’ve uploaded the 2008-2009 Carolina Hurricanes schedule in .CSV, .ICS, and Google Calendar formats.
Outlook/Palm Users
- Create a new folder in your in Outlook calendar (Canes08, for example). Use the File | Import and Export… to import from “another program or file”, then “Comma Separated File (Windows)”. This will set up the schedule in your new sub-calendar where you can make whatever changes you want.
- iPhone Users – You are done. Now you can view the Canes’ schedule as its own sub-calender or as a part of all calendars.
- When you are happy with the way the subcalendar looks, change the calendar view to “Events” (instead of 7-day or 31-Day or whatever view you’re using). “Select All” from the list, and drag them over to your main “Calendar” (The Treo and other Palm Handhelds only sync to the main calendar – time for Palm to get with the program on that one!). If you want to keep your sub-calendar intact, use Ctrl-drag instead of plain drag. That will create a copy of each event to the main Calendar and keep the Canes08 calendar in place. Sync your handheld to copy the events to the handheld.

Google Calendar Users
Consult the public calendars at the following locations:
Notes
Calendars are apt to change, so check back occasionally for updates. To determine the version of your schedule, open the note associated with any event, and look for the version number. If your calendar is older than those listed above, simply delete the events in Outlook in your old one and import the events of the newer file. Google Calendar is dynamically up-to-date.
Use at your own risk. I do not accept responsibility for any consequences resulting from errors in the schedule.
iPhone Mania Sweeps Triangle
Though there weren’t many people camping out for iPhones this year, the rush on the Apple devices has been stronger than expected (even if Apple continues to lie about the “1 million” units “sold”). AT&T stores are out of stock and taking names on an estimated 20-day waiting list. The Apples Stores, on the other hand, are announcing availability at 9pm each night on their website , and doing first-come-first-serve sales the following mornings.
There are none available in the Triangle’s two stores (Crabtree and Southpoint) as this is being posted, but check back nightly for an Apple Store update.
Stay Away From the Guacamole
WRAL interviewed State Epidemiologist Dr. Jeffrey Engel who feels the state’s salmonella cases may get worse. The U.S.D.A. lifted their warning on tomatoes Thursday. The main focus now is avocados, and fresh jalapeno and serrano peppers. There has also been some concern about cilantro, which is difficult to wash. These ingredients are found in salsas, guacamole, and other southwestern, Mexican, and Indian foods. (Oh the humanity!)
Unless you enjoy counting floor tiles, heed these warnings, folks.
Hyatt Place Planned for West Raleigh
Plans have been submitted for yet another Hyatt hotel in West Raleigh. As one may recall from April , plans for a 123-room Hyatt variant (.pdf file) near the RBC Center were submitted to the city. This week, however, plans for a 6-floor, 133-room Hyatt Place (.pdf file) two blocks away from the first were submitted. This hotel’s site is near the Chapel Hill Road/I-40 interchange on Corporate Center Drive.
