Hurricanes Full Schedule Released
The Carolina Hurricanes today released the upcoming ’08-’09 full schedule. The schedule is available in .PDF format here . Other formats will be available soon , and if an Outlook-friendly format doesn’t surface soon, one will be available here.
Soleil Stalls
One of the area’s highest-profile planned projects has stalled due to American’s current lending woes, according to the News & Observer . The 43-story Soleil Center is planned to be Raleigh’s second-tallest building, and would include 54 condos sitting atop a 290-room Westin hotel. The project site was prepared in 2006 by imploding the Sheraton hotel that previously sat on the site. Since that public event, though, the only work that has happened has been somewhat generic site development for whatever project follows.
According to the article the developers estimate that it will take at least 3 months to secure new financing. This is bad news for the area’s woefully substandard hotel market. Surely Starwood Hotels, the parent company for the Westin chain, is not happy about having to wait longer for a presence near Crabtree Valley Mall, one of the South’s top shopping centers.
Ruth’s Chris Opens Monday at North Hills
Monday, July 21, marks the grand opening of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at North Hills. The space formerly occupied by JK’s Steakhouse has slowly undergone minor renovation throughout the summer. This marks the third Ruth’s Chris in North Carolina operated by Annapolis-based Serious Steaks . The others are in Cary and Wilmington, with Southpoint soon to follow.
The Embers Return to North Hills
Thursday at 6pm marks the return of The Embers to the North Hills Concert Series. The ever-growing event attracted a few hundred for its inaugural event with The Embers back in May, but its popularity has grown considerably since. Recent concerts have caused parking lots to even overflow into the North Hills neighborhood. (A word of caution: Currituck Drive is being paved tomorrow, so Pamlico is a better bet.)
The schedule continues with two more dates later this month: Billy Scott and the Party Prophets (7/24), and Liquid Pleasure (7/31).
Raleigh Unveils New Logo
The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau unveiled a new logo for the City of Raleigh yesterday. The new look is the result of 15 months of brand strategy research, with the intent to extend the concept of Raleigh as a great place to live, work, and visit as the new Convention Center opens.
Hall of Fame Concert Grows to Two-Day Event
I recently received more news about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert coming to Cary’s Booth Amphitheatre. So far, artists currently or formerly with Journey, Yes, Styx, Traffic, Jefferson Starship, Grateful Dead, John Entwistle Band, Deep Purple, Rainbow, and Blue Oyster Cult will join local artists such as Arrogance, The Connells, Grand Society, and Parmalee.
As reported in an earlier post , the event is centered around Saturday, September 20. The event has grown, though, and will actually begin on Friday, September 19. Anyone holding a ticket to the September 20 show will gain admittance to the September 19 opening night at no additional charge by showing his or her Saturday ticket at the front gate that evening.

Chop House Grille Closes Shop
TBJ is reporting that the Chop House Grille in the Falls River II shopping center has closed. The company’s other two stores in the area, Chop House Grill (Cary) and Capital City Chophouse (near RDU) remain open.
Magnetic Fields Coming to Meymandi
60’s pop throwback band The Magnetic Fields will be at Meymandi Hall on October 18. Tickets go on sale Friday morning at 10am.
Powerhouse Plaza Updates Renderings
The development team behind Powerhouse Plaza (previous article) has released new renderings for their highly anticipated project. The 11-story building will sit across the street from the 42nd Street Oyster Bar and house five stories of office space, and five stories of Hyatt Place hotel rooms. The ground floor, as shown in the the second image below, will contain the hotel lobby, a large restaurant, and a small retail corner store.
Raleigh, Simpson Reach Plaza Agreement
WRAL is reporting that the City of Raleigh has reached a tentative agreement with The Simpson Organization, owners of the Bank of America building, which will allow construction to begin for the City Plaza project. The agreement prevents the need for the City of Raleigh to condemn the space needed for construction. A move for condemnation was approved by the Raleigh City Council on July 1 .
Yancy’s Officially Closes Doors
It’s official. Yancy’s Downtown has closed. Since filing for bankruptcy protection and realigning ownership in February, the restaurant has been operated as a rescue effort by Vango Foods. In yesterday’s mail, however, Vango received a copy of a court order terminating the restaurant’s lease. There will be a hearing on July 30, but most likely the outcome of that hearing will allow the landlord to move on with the space. Most likely a different restaurant will open soon after the new convention center’s opening.
Chuck Berry, Soul Asylum Added to Raleigh Wide Open
One of music’s all-time legends, Chuck Berry , has been added to the Raleigh Wide Open celebration, according to David Menconi . Berry, 81, stands as one of my personal favorite guitar players, as he helped to bring the 12-bar blues to America’s living rooms in the 50’s. Can’t wait!!
Soul Asylum, one of alternative’s bigger bands in the 1990’s, will also be on board for the festival. While David Pirner is no Chuck Berry, the band still put some good songs out there, especially before they got famous.
