Aloft Hotel Coming to 540
The airport area is getting ready to get a new hotel. Narsi Properties has submitted plans for a 5-story, 144-room Aloft hotel at the (big) intersection of I-540 and Aviation Parkway. The site plan (,PDF) shows an L-shaped hotel with no apparent pool. There will be, however, three parking spaces reserved for hybrid cars.
9/15 NOTE: Starwood’s official site reports an opening date of 3/1/10.

3 Doors Down Concert Postponed
Brad Arnold, lead singer of 3 Doors Down, has been advised by his doctors to take an additional period of time off to rest his voice. The band will postpone the next seven shows on the their current headline tour, including Tuesday’s date at Walnut Creek.
Charter Square Begins Marketing Push
The first iteration of the Charter Square (Warning: music) marketing website is up. More will be added later, but it looks like the seed to a lot of new info to the project. Another interesting site for the project is Craig Davis Properties’ site.
The second part of the push is the new banner wrap around the project’s protective wall. They weren’t able to get it completely in place for Raleigh Wide Open due to the incoming hurricane, but have it up now.
Paperhand Puppets Take Over NCMA
Tonight at 7pm, the Paperhand Puppets will perform the second (and final) production of the weekend at the NC Museum of Art. The oversize creatures, made of paper-machie and cloth, have a reputation for putting on quite a show. The production features larger-than-life nature puppets, shadow puppets, live music, and good humor. Watch out for some super-sized insects in this spectacle.

Carolina Rollergirls Wheel Into Fall
At 6pm tonight the #4 Carolina All-Stars return to Dorton Arena to face off against the all-star team from #13 Tucson Roller Derby , the Saddletramps. It’s a rematch of the opening round of the 2007 National Tournament. The CRG All-Stars surprised many with an exciting 80-73 win over TRD back in October 2007, and are ready to prove it was no fluke when the Saddletramps come to town.
Tickets are available at the league’s website, CarolinaRollergirls.com , or at Ornamentea, Schoolkids in Raleigh, Bull City Records in Durham and Cameron’s in Chapel Hill.
- Adults : $10 in advance, or $14 at the Dorton Arena Box Office
- Kids : $5 in advance, or $7 at the Dorton Arena Box Office
- Students : $8 (w/ID) at the Dorton Arena Box Office
- Groups (15+) : $8 in advance (online only)
Get Gas
Word from friends is that gas is gone from towns like Burnsville and Greenville. Several stations in Raleigh are also out of gas. I filled up at midnight last night for $4.30/gal and the pump was ever-so-slow. This will be a short-term problem, but the time is now to fill up.

More Talent Added to Rock Hall Benefit
The list gets more impressive for next week’s Hall of Fame concert in Cary! Pete Hopkins has been selected as the visitRaleigh.com National Band Search winner from among 792 entries nationwide and will open the show on September 19. In addition 16-year-old singer/songwriter Michelle Blanchard has been selected to perform two songs on September 20.
A few more veterans have been added to the bill, too:
- Tom Bowes – Tower of Power singer ( If I’m not mistaken, he’s the guy who can flat-out sing on this version of “So Very Hard To Go” )
- Tommy Williams – Concert for Bangladesh Revisited lead singer and lead guitarist
- Randy Hansen – Jimi Hendrix tribute vocalist and guitarist
- Eric Bazilian – from The Hooters (and wrote Joan Osborne’s “One of Us”, a ’95 “Song of the Year” Grammy nominee)
- Alan White – Yes drummer. (also played on John Lennon’s Imagine album featuring “Instant Karma” and George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass album which featured “My Sweet Lord”)
Five Restaurants I Miss
Restaurants really come-and-go. Unfortunately some good ones weren’t able to make it for one reason or another. Which do you miss?
I’ll go with:
Lock, Stock, & Barrel (Colony Shopping Ctr) – The first salad bar in the area and one of the all-time best. Great sourdough melt burger, spaghetti, and sandwiches. Drinks were served Ball jars, and 50’s era jukeboxes were at every table.
G.D. Ritzy’s – Chain out of Columbus, OH IIRC. Great little fried burger and fries. Really good ice cream, too. Chain was mis-managed and folded, yet our stores (now Hooters on WF Rd and Breuggers on Avent Ferry) did well
El Pollo Asado (now Arbys near TTC) – Flame-roasted chicken chain that served pieces with sides of salsa, tortillas, and vegetables. mmmm.
Darryl’s – If you weren’t here before the sale to General Mills (or whatever- around 1980), you completely won’t get this one. Darryl’s was the child of Darryl Davis, Thad Eure, and Charlie Winston. I remember the iron jail cells, the elevator, the pong table, the graffiti-carved booths and tables, the heavy frozen mugs, the red carpet, and the jukebox like they were yesterday. Foodwise, I like the steak sandwich, hamburger, blue cheese dressing, pizza chips, and spaghetti. Perfectly family friendly yet totally appropriate for dates, it was probably the most perfect restaurant for daily all-purpose eating in this city’s history.
Sadak’s – Short-lived, but this sit-down middle eastern restaurant at Hillsborough and Horne (where Q-Shack was) was run by Walid Sadak, owner of Hector’s in Crabtree. I love Hector’s, but Sadak’s had some even more interesting items on the menu.
Honorable mention: Santa Fe (MacGregor Village), Luigi’s (NH), Deli King (NH), Su Casa (Crabtree), Oak Park Pharmacy, Glenwood Pharmacy, Nana’s Chophouse, Hang Chow, The Far East, Swensons, Jack’s Steakhouse, Brother’s Pizza, Hardees on Wake Forest Road (now American Pride car wash), Black Dog Cafe, Jason’s Donuts (Falls Village), Hamburger Hut (Morgan & Mayo).
Notes: Lock Stock, & Barrel has reopened in Clayton. It is in a strip shopping center and while it still features the sourdough cheeseburger, the owner didn’t bring much else. Darryl’s had pizza chips and blue cheese dressing that are now featured at the Angus Barn. Sadak’s baklava, hummus, and tabouleh are available at the Crabtree Hector’s (Food court).
Canes Unveil Third Uniforms
