Wake Seniors To Tend to Median

The State of North Carolina announced today that it is turning over the maintenance of I-440 median vegetation to the Wake County Seniors Garden Club. The club needs your help, though. President Peter Pantz asks the public for any donations of flashlights, knee pads, and high-visibility orange vests. The group plans to barricade the early morning left lane closures with their own cars. Safety is a concern for the group, however. Pantz said,“This should be plenty safe for us. People are used to changing lanes when they see a slow-driving Buick in the left lane. The only difference is that the cars won’t actually be moving.”

The tour includes 58,000 homes in the Raleigh area. Hours are 9:00 am thru 5:00 pm Saturday.

Cary Tops Raleigh in National List

Raleigh is no stranger to lists centered around the best places for business, best places to live, best places for singles, etc. However a national list has been published and it doesn’t give the crown to Raleigh. Quilting Magazine has named Cary to the top of two lists: America’s Best Place for Quilting, and America’s Best Places for Macrame. Magazine spokesman Lou Stooth said they gave high marks to Raleigh’s neighbor for it’s lack of distracting nightlife, outstanding cable TV service, access to cafeterias, and its proximity to an airport with daily non-stop connections to Branson, MO.

Raleigh To Host Women’s NCAA Action

The NCAA today announced the host cities for the 2012 NCAA Women’s tournament, and Raleigh has been selected, once again, to host regional finals. NCAA spokesperson Tina See said, “After 2,659 packed the RBC Center for the Louisville/Maryland regional final Sunday in the RBC Center, it is only natural for a rabid women’s basketball hotbed to see some more action.”

The NCAA is looking into cost-cutting measures, however, for future tournament and has stipulated that the next NCAA event in Raleigh be held in Dorton Arena. Also photography will not be permitted in the venue so that pictures like this don’t hit the internet.

North Hills East to Get Rotating Theater

A decade ago we saw the American movie theater’s next evolutionary step, stadium seating. The next wave, which promises to make all current theaters obsolete, arrives to Raleigh next year in the North Hills East complex. “Rotheater”, as it’s called, is a new concept where a circular theater rotates around a cylindrical screen. “The concept’s seed was the Carousel of Progress at Disneyworld.,” said Epic Entertainment Tech Director Boyd Schidt. “American’s are tired of static theaters with static screens.”

The concept is sure to take hold quickly given the shortening of Americans’ attention spans. Schidt’s son, a North Hills spokesman (affectionately known as “The Little Schidt”), said this particular installation will feature four separate pie-wedge shaped theaters. Each fourth of the circle will be separate from the other fourths, and will watch one movie on their screen. After 15 minutes the theater will rotate around the stationary screen set. So, each quadrant will watch a different movie for 15 minutes. Patrons stay for two complete rotations. “This way everyone gets to see a little bit of all of the movies we have,” said Schidt.

Cameron Village to Add Parking

The city’s oldest shopping center will wrap their most popular stores with elevated parking structures. “The decks will offer an abundance of parking and plenty of flexibility for shoppers,” said center manager Tim Burr.

Two decks will be built. One will be over the parking lot in front of Noodles & Company. The other will wrap the building across the street, where Cameron Bar and Grill and Blockbuster Video are.

The center began a massive renovation 18 years ago that revived the center to unprecedented popularity. Construction will begin soon.

U2 To Headline Mule Days

There’s been a lot of talk about this next item. (Maybe a little too much talk). Benson’s annual outdoor festival, Mule Days, will be taking it to the next level this year by booking U2 as its headlining band. The concert is free, and in grand Mule Days tradition, will take place at the singing grove near downtown Benson.

U2 was previously thought to be playing at Raleigh’s Carter-Finley stadium, but U2’s tour manager Oliver Clossoff said that news was premature. “We are excited to bring U2’s message to a venue that can more adequately handle the level of technology the show brings.”
