“Sylvia” Completing Its Run Sunday
This year’s 4-show series Hot Summer Nights series has begun at the Kennedy Theatre. The first show is Sylvia , a comedy directed by Alan Campbell. It centers around a 22-year long marriage that is rocked by sudden introduction of a dog. The show contains mature subject matter and runs through Sunday, so only three shows remain. Tickets are $22 and are General Admission.
Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park or that has found him bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.
Accelerate To Merge
Alright, people! Here is one of my biggest pet-peeves. As shown in the current NCDMV driving manual , the correct way to enter an interstate highway is to “Adjust to freeway speed in the acceleration lane”.
This means that the proper, safe way to enter the flowing traffic , is to use your accelerator and blend. Don’t go 20 mph less than the traffic, and don’t expect people in the right-hand lane to perform a dangerous lane change just because you didn’t bother to find a hole in your approach!!!
Yes, one should drive defensively and always try to avoid an accident. However those who sloppily enter highways are creating high-speed accident situations with their timidity.
Downtown Fitness Location to Reopen

Good news! With a bit more free time on his hands to pursue his Raleigh love, Chris at Raleighing has decided to rev things back up. His post today explains that he’ll be putting up posts as soon as he gets the administrative back-end up to speed. The Raleigh area has missed his talent and welcomes Chris back to the local blogging community.

Kings Dominion to get Gigacoaster
While there are unfortunately no roller-coasters in the Raleigh area, there are 38 roller coasters within a 3.5-hour drive of Raleigh. Not many cities in the world are an easy road trip from that many.
Next summer that number will push 40, and will do it with world-class style. Yesterday a sleuthy coaster enthusiast let the cat out of the bag about Kings Dominion’s new coaster for 2010. It will be a gigacoaster by Intamin , which by definition, means it will be taller than 300 feet, placing it among the tallest 5 coasters in the world. If you have seen the 310-foot, 93-mph Millennium Force coaster (pictured) at Cedar Point on TV, then you have seen another gigacoaster by Intamin. It will be located on land that was once the safari ride, behind the Outer Limits.
To put this height in perspective, the two-year old Griffon at Busch Gardens Williamsburg is 205 feet tall, and the Eiffel Tower 1/3 scale replica at King’s Dominion is only 275 feet tall.
In other regional coaster news, Carowinds has unfortunately destroyed its log flume ride to make way for a new roller-coaster coming next season. This will certainly be a showcase coaster, but Carowinds loses a bit of family elegance in removing their log flume.

Big Changes Afoot At ITB Autoland
The cluster of auto dealerships on Wake Forest Road has just undergone some major changes. In a move that probably has Al Smith rolling in his grave, Buick joins Cadillac, GMC, and Pontiac across the street Thompson . Southern States has moved its Nissan operation into the space vacated by Buick, and will create a large used car superstore in the former Nissan space. Volkswagon remains unchanged. It will be interesting to see if Thompson expands its operations by acquiring some of the abandoned adjacent businesses on Creekside Drive.
High School Musical 2 Works, Works, Works Out Movie’s Shortcomings
Over the past couple of decades, the North Carolina Theatre has developed a reputation as one of the best regional theater companies outside of the New York area. Each season is filled with outstanding up-and coming local and national talent placed under excellent direction.
The current offering, High School Musical 2, continues the tradition of impressive productions by the company. The movie originally premiered two years ago, and was a resounding success for Disney. Their collection of handpicked talent plus a great set of songs equaled the strongest of the HSM franchise. While it is unusual to see a stage adaptation of an original movie, the HSM2 story actually plays better in the theater.
The stars of the production, Chase Peacock (Troy), Renee Albulario (Gabriella), Gretchen Bieber (Sharpay), and Jason Edward Cook (Ryan) all do a fantastic job of adapting the roles for their own talents without distorting their characters. Peacock was strong, but played his role fairly safely. Albulario, staying true to the movie’s portrayal of her character, actually has a prettier voice than the always-sharp, piercingly squeaky Vanessa Hudgens . Bieber’s twist on Sharpay takes the character into a much more spoiled, darker realm than Ashley Tisdale’s more daffy approach. Perhaps that was to be expected given Bieber’s own treatment of her fellow cast members.
The stage is a delicate space where only a few actors truly seem a natural fit. How many American Idol contestants look like they are on a telethon versus the truly talented few that make it to the end? Not one second did Adam Lambert look out of place on the show. The actor that truly stood out as being totally comfortable and believable is Josh Breckenridge. His portrayal of Chad Danforth blows away Corbin Bleu’s, especially in executing one of the show’s most important numbers, “I Don’t Dance”. The song was awkward in the movie, but really shines as one of the best in Act II here.
Edward G. Robinson’s orchestra pit was excellent, though it sometimes overpowered singers during some of the verses, especially in Act I.
Speaking of bands, the major role acting debut of Broughton High School’s band director, “JR” Richardson was fun to see. The director wanted to cast an “edgy” person into the role, and they got it. Richardson plays the role of Mr. Fulton, the drill sergeant, summer-long boss of our heroes. Fulton is much less of a pawn to Sharpay’s family in this production, and stands as his own man late in the show, offering his own consoling wisdom at a key moment before the show’s climax.
Kudos also go to the performance of Jeffrey Scott Vizcaino, who offers comic relief in a role that did not appear in the movie. His knock-out line,”Wow, you guys really sight-read well,” brought the house down. It was a moment of honest, self-realization for a bombastic musical where athletic high-schoolers easily nail new choreography as well as the harmonies in a brand new song.
Where the stage production really shines is in the execution of the plot. There were several times during the movie where I found myself asking questions like ,”How did they all-of-a-sudden become friends? Why is Gabriella leaving? Why is Corbin Bleu trying to dance?” The unabridged story told in this stage production is far superior to the movie’s story.
Director Casey Hushion’s production is a bit slow in mid- Act I, but really takes off just before intermission. The theme of Troy’s over-extension of himself with promises he cannot keep is fully explored, and presented in a very dark, moving mashup of themes presented earlier in the Act. There is no letdown with Act II, either. The production explores the Sharpay’s selfishness and ultimate misery as well the dreams of Ryan excellently. The production also appropriately deals with the rocky romance between Troy and Gabriella, something sorely lacking in the movie.
There are still four more shows remaining in the show’s run ( tickets ). Both today and tomorrow there will be 2pm matinees while tonight there is an 8pm show. The final performance begins at 7pm tomorrow night. All performances are in Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium.
222 Glenwood Sees More Retail Changes
As reported 24 days ago here , the Dunkin’ Donuts is closing at 222 Glenwood. Today is the last day, but there are new businesses coming to the retail level of the condo building. Word is that the space formerly occupied by European Espresso & Wine Cafe will become a second pizza-by-the-slice entry to the Glenwood South market.
Also coming to the area will be “an Asian place”. It isn’t clear as to whether the restaurant will occupy the former Dunkin’ Donuts space or will do the long-awaited upfit on the space to the left of Tobacco Road. Best bets are on the latter. Hopefully these will be good places that can add to the Glenwood experience.
Sonny Rollins Coming to UNC
One of the last living Hard Bop Jazz musicians is coming to UNC this fall. On September 22, Sonny Rollins will be playing at UNC’s Memorial Hall. Tickets go on sale to the public on July 13 thru the UNC ticket office .
Rollins is one of the most important figures in the history. Not only did he play with Miles Davis, he was an influence on Davis when he was young. The chances to see guys who have played with Davis, (Rocky Mount’s) Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, Charlie Parker, and Art Blakey are coming to an end, so don’t miss this one!
