7 C’s Cafe Closes

Early in the summer disgruntled Bear Rock Cafe franchisees C&W Six Forks decided to cut ties and go it alone. As reported here in July, they converted their Creekside Crossing location into a new concept, 7 C’s Cafe. Unfortunately the concept lasted fewer than two months and the site new sits empty.

Football Is In The Air

…not for long of course, because of gravity (or because for some reason, since expansion the ACC has steadily disappeared from the final Top 25 poll each consecutive year).

The college football season gets started tonight with ESPN’s marquee game, South Carolina at N.C. State. The network signs on at 7:00 PM, live, from Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina. The game marks the return of opposing coach Steve Spurrier, who quarterbacked his alma mater against the Pack in the stadium’s second ever game.

It also marks the return of Erin Andrews. It will be her first television appearance since the scandalous Peeping Tom video of her in her hotel room hit the internet. Andrews, for all of your Oprah fans, is a sideline reporter for ESPN. She has long hair, and, well, you know the rest of the story. Anyone had an Erin sighting (other than herself in the mirror) today?

Follow me on Twitter for all of the game-time coverage. I’ll be live and on-site (that site being my den because for the first time in months there is actually something decent to watch on TV).

RBC Center Unveils New Scoreboard

Today the RBC Center officially unveiled its new video production facilities, including a new $4.3 million Daktronics “scoreboard”. The display actually consists of 12 video boards and two ribbon boards.

According to the fascinating CanesVision blog all summer, today was crunch day, as the entirely new production room had to be in place to operate the video boards in the adjacent Carter-Finley Stadium, which hosts a nationally-televised football game tomorrow night.

The video board is impressive, and it appears that the equipment will enable CanesVision to do much more than before. The crew needs to be careful with layout, however, as the display can easily stumble into looking more like a “jumbletron” (look at the hideous mess in Knoxville, for instance. What was that score, again?).

In the official photo at the RBC Center’s website, there are 26 discrete items one can see from the viewer’s angle. The ribbon boards are especially confusing as team logos from one “side” are adjacent to team logos from another “side” (in this case, an empty black zone would delineate the scoreboard facades better than a white stripe on the constant red background, guys). The original purpose of the scoreboard was to deliver key stats to the fans and players, and this purpose cannot get lost in a well-done display.

Hopefully the crew has what they need, too, to deliver good in-game basketball stats. The previous displays offered no more information than we got in the Greenboro Coliseum 35 years ago. They only occasionally offered paltry player stats of Points and Fouls, and only for players currently in the game. Team stats were only offered for a few seconds at halftime and during select timeouts. It would be great if the CanesVision crew can offer as much data as the United Center offers its fans.

The first official chance we have to see the boards in action comes two weeks from Friday, when the Hurricanes host the Predators in an exhibition game. Be sure to check the roofcam this week as the ice is being painted.

Man V. Food Features Durham Tonight

Tonight’s episode of Man Vs. Food travels to Durham where they find the Backyard BBQ Pit and Wimpy’s Grill. The show’s website also mentions Blu Seafood, Four Square, Nosh, Dain’s Place, and Daisy Cakes. The show airs at 10pm on Travel Channel (rerun at 11pm). Here are some more details:

Durham has been called the "Cradle of Cue", so Adam starts his journey with a search for some good ole Eastern Carolina BBQ. His search lands him at Backyard BBQ Pit, which I’ve personally been to and can say from experience is absolutely to die for! They’re known for their chopped BBQ pork, which btw isn’t really chopped, it’s stirred (that’s how tender it is!). In Adam’s own words, the pork "coats your tongue like velvet".

Next up, Adam heads to Wimpy’s Grill which is known for big breakfasts and big burgers. This place is just down the street from Duke University and is a hot spot for tailgating and eating. Adam tries the Garbage Burger – a double cheeseburger topped with bacon, chili, coleslaw, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and condiments. This burger is so messy Adam says, "I feel I need to eat it in the shower".

What do a gymnast, cheerleader, football player, and foodie from Brooklyn all have in common? They’re running the Doughman Relay together for the main event of the episode! Adam and fellow Travel Channel host Dhani Jones team up with a couple locals to take on this 15 mile race of running, biking, swimming, and eating. I don’t want to give too much away, but there is a fried green tomato sandwich involved and Dhani kicks some serious booty on the bike! Will they place in the top five?
Tune-in Wednesday, September 2nd, at 10 E/P to find out! In the meantime, check out this sneak peek video about Wimpy’s Grill (and feel free to post this on your blog).

Bloom Coming to Cary

Food Lion’s “upscale” line of stores, Bloom, will open a store in Cary this coming winter. The store will anchor the new Fairview Village shopping Center, located at the corner of Ten-Ten and Holly Springs Roads (map it).

Bloom’s merchandise is not what makes the store special. Rather it is the in-basket scanners, kiosks, and easy-to-reach shelving that makes Bloom interesting. It is nice to see a grocer who is trying some things outside of the carbon copy systems we see in most grocery stores.

rudinos According to TBJ, the former Hollywood Video space in Olde Raleigh Village will soon be the newest location for Rudino’s Pizza and Grinders.
