A/J’s New York Eatery Now Open in Crabtree
The former location of Le Garlic Bistro is now home to A/J’s New York Eatery. The food court restaurant’s menu features deli sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats including ham, turkey, roast beef, pastrami, corned beef, and others. Additionally they serve breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, homemade salads, and cold cuts by the pound. Hopefully it will be a good enough addition (to an already strong food court) to push out Subway.
Rudino’s Coming to Olde Raleigh
According to TBJ, the former Hollywood Video space in Olde Raleigh Village will soon be the newest location for Rudino’s Pizza and Grinders . While the shopping center is almost in the shadows of the RBC Center, the addition will become the third Italian restaurant for that particular block of Edwards Mill Road, including Stromboli’s and Bella Monica.
LEGO Mini-Build Coming Tomorrow
Tomorrow the LEGO store in Crabtree will be holding it’s monthly Mini-Build . The session allows children ages 6-12 a changes to build a small project. It goes from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, but there are limited spaces available, so parents and their children have been lining up in the 4 o’clock hour for previous sessions. This month’s mini-build is a pencil and a book.
The LEGO store is on the first floor of Crabtree Valley Mall in the center court (Across from Belk Men’s Store).
Deli To Replace Petit Bistro
About a month ago, Le Petit Bistro closed their location in Crabtree Valley Mall’s excellent food court. It had nothing to do with that store’s repeated “B†sanitation grades, though. The chain is pulling most of its shopping mall locations and going for transit terminals and specialty village settings. During the summer the space will be filled by “a New York-styled deli that only has one location in North Carolinaâ€. Most likely it is the aggressively-expanding New York NY Fresh Deli which opened in downtown Apex a few months ago.
LEGO Store Now Open in Crabtree
The LEGO store in Crabtree Valley Mall opened its doors at 10am this morning. The store is located in the center court, on the lower level (in the space once occupied by the Sharper Image, Museum Company, and, uh, Orange Bowl 😉 )
Crabtree Getting Lego Store
Sue Stock reported today that Crabtree will be getting a large Lego Store in May. This will be the chain’s 24th store.
Get Ready for Camp Night
The Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer camp night for Raleigh is coming Tuesday, December 2 at 7pm at the Raleigh Woman’s Club. Camp nights are a fantastic way for future, current, and past campers and councilors to get together and see what “the best camps of all” have to offer. The event usually lasts a couple of hours and features the new camp DVD, comments and introductions of campers and staff, door prizes, and yes, plenty of fireballs!
I have to say, as a six-summer Sea Gull veteran, it is hard to match the experience at these camps. Some of my most prized experiences occurred in Arapahoe. The camps’ ability to bring together an enthusiastic group of responsible college-aged staff members is nothing short of astounding. If you know someone who is interested, let them know about camp night. It is one of the few ways to get an appreciation for the true world of Sea Gull and Seafarer.
Fleming’s Opening In A Month
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar , the newest addition at Crabtree Valley Mall, has not set an actual opening date yet. However, word is that the restaurant will open its doors to the public in the second week of November.
Battistella’s To Make Final Push
Greg Cox is reporting that Battistella’s New Orleans Kitchen , in the Crabtree Inn (formerly Ramada Inn) will be closing on September 27. The hotel will soon be razed and replaced by two hotels, apparently. He also says that while Brian Battistella is looking for a new location, he also is going to really ramp up the menu in this location’s final days. I have heard good things about this restaurant and haven’t had a chance to get over there.
Soleil Stalls
One of the area’s highest-profile planned projects has stalled due to American’s current lending woes, according to the News & Observer . The 43-story Soleil Center is planned to be Raleigh’s second-tallest building, and would include 54 condos sitting atop a 290-room Westin hotel. The project site was prepared in 2006 by imploding the Sheraton hotel that previously sat on the site. Since that public event, though, the only work that has happened has been somewhat generic site development for whatever project follows.
According to the article the developers estimate that it will take at least 3 months to secure new financing. This is bad news for the area’s woefully substandard hotel market. Surely Starwood Hotels, the parent company for the Westin chain, is not happy about having to wait longer for a presence near Crabtree Valley Mall, one of the South’s top shopping centers.
McCormick & Schmick’s Now Open
The long-awaited Raleigh location for McCormick & Schmick’s opens today. The high-end chain was rumored to be going into about 12 different new projects in Raleigh at one time or another, but in the end they settled on Crabtree’s dreadful parking deck expansion.
The restaurant is basically seafood’s answer to Sullivan’s, and if Wednesday night’s grand opening party is any indication, M&S will be a perfect fit for a market needing high-end seafood that even land-lubbers would like. The decor is extremely buttoned down, contemporary with a hint of Asian influence. Three stained glass light fixtures over the bar honoring the area’s major college’s remind us that we aren’t in Anywhere, USA. While we were able to sample only a small portion of the menu at the special event, the samples were all we needed to know that their deep-frying techniques and sauce-making are spot-on.
They’ve done a couple of lunches this week that have already gotten rave reviews. My trusty sources started out with the delicious Shrimp Flat-bread Pizza appetizer (w/ tomatoes and mozzarella). It was just under 12″ in diameter and had a very thin crust. Next, they moved on to the Bacon and Blue Cheese Chopped Salad and the Seasonal Mixed Greens Salad. Both were delightful. In fact, they commented that a fantastic lunch for two would be for each to get a salad and share a pizza.
Given that these are hungry folk, they moved on to the entrees, and weren’t disappointed. They ordered an entree salad, Classic Bay Shrimp Louis, which featured much lettuce, small (but numerous) shrimp, and an excess of 1000 Island Dressing. Dressed properly, they said, this salad would have been a big hit. The other entree was the Stuffed Shrimp, which was fantastic. There were only two shrimp, but they were large and filled with a delicious crab stuffing.
The highlight of the meal came at the end, with the Tiramisu Cheesecake. While this pair does like their Tiramisu, they said this was the finest dessert they have ever eaten, which carries a lot of weight (no pun intended) with this observer.
We have some good mid-level seafood restaurants in Raleigh, but there haven’t been any that are good for those wanting a top notch business meeting, special occasion, or fine dining experience. McCormick & Schmick’s has done well in some of America’s classic seafood cities, and Raleigh will fall right in line.
Below you’ll find the menus for McCormick & Schmick’s opening day. The first image is the Dinner Menu, with the wine list following. The third image shows the Lunch menu, with the wine list following. Due to the large format of the originals, it was necessary to section the menus before scanning, and reassemble the images electronically. Please pardon any format inconsistencies or strange lines running through portions of the images.
