Fourth Venue Added for Gant Benefit, Tix Open Up
Today organizers announced a fourth venue for the upcoming Oliver Gant Benefit. Here is the update from the event’s page:
A fourth venue has been added to this show. Tift Merritt, Bombadil, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, The Small Ponds and Brice Randall Bickford will play The Lincoln Theatre on Friday, March 23. As with all venues, doors open at 7:30 p.m., and wristband pickup will be available at all four venues. Tickets go on sale today at noon via etix.com . These tickets permit access to Kings, Tir Na Nog, The Pour House and The Lincoln Theatre—space, as always, permitting.
I have been remiss to not mention this great event benefitting the son of NewRaleigh Editor Jedidiah Gant and his wife Stacy, as well as some organizations that have helped the family get through Oliver’s difficult treatment. Oliver was diagnosed with a sacrococcygeal teratoma , the most common tumor among newborns. It is the perfect event to help the Gant family, being such lovers of local music and festivals.
Sugarland Coming to TWC
On Saturday, April 28, Sugarland returns to Raleigh to play the TimeWarnerCableMusicPavilionatWalnutCreek. General Public tickets go on sale tomorrow (Fri) morning.

Download ACC Release to your iPad, Daily
We are in the home stretch of the regular season for ACC basketball, and each in the trio of Triangle teams is having a fascinating season. One of the most interesting downloadable documents on the internet is the ACC Basketball Press Release ; a 25-page document that is chock full of data about the league’s 12 teams. On the iPad, the document ( and any other PDF from the web ) is even easier to enjoy.
While one sitting with the document is impressive, it is even more impressive to realize that the document is updated on the day after each league game . Keeping up with the ever-changing document can be laborious if a good system isn’t in place. Of course one could just bookmark the above link, but if you really want a system that works better, use this system for downloading this document easily:
Hardware
- Windows PC (XP/Vista/7)
- iPad (1 or 2)
Software
- Autohotkey (for Windows)
- Dropbox (any platform
- GoodReader (for iPad)
NCSU To Face Tennessee in Kick-Off
The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game has been set, and it will feature N.C. State vs. Tennessee on Friday, August 31. The game will take place in the Georgia Dome and will be carried by ESPNU.
The Beach Boys Coming to The Walt
Hot off of a special Grammy tribute Sunday night, The Beach Boys announced a 40+ city tour yesterday which features an April 29 (Sun) date at The Walt. While Raleigh has been a frequent stop for the band through the years, this time the band features all of the surviving original members. The band will be in support of a new not-yet-released album that, too, features the original Boys. General Public tickets go on sale next Saturday (2/25), so get in on next week’s presales.
Hopefully Mike Love will wear the hat pictured so that we will easily be able to identify the band on stage.
Feist Coming to Memorial Auditorium
On Thursday, May 3, Leslie Feist will play Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium. She is on tour supporting her October release, Metals. No word on tix yet.
A Revivalry?
The legendary basketball rivalry in the Triangle has always been State/Carolina. However since the Fire and Ice era, State has struggled with its basketball program, and the flower on that rivalry has faded. In the last 17 meetings, UNC has won 16 times. In NCSU era since Georgetown’s Alonzo Mourning “travelled”, State has only beaten the Heels in 11 of the 45 meetings.
This year’s NCSU team, while not a factor nationally, has many quality tools and is showing that it can do many right things under new coach Mark Gottfried. With UNC’s uncertainty since the season-ending Strickland injury last Thursday, tonight’s matchup may be one of the most interesting games between the two in decades. It is one of the first times in a while that State fans can enter this game reasonably hoping for a win, and that makes this game a lot more fun.
I’ve said all season that State and Carolina will split their regular season series, but I think that State win will come in the second meeting. Though tonight’s game should be a good one worthy of ESPN’s hype last night. The game starts at 7pm and is on ESPN.
Elton John Returning to RBC Center
On Friday, March 16th, Elton John returns to Raleigh’s RBC Center. Tickets go on sale to the public next Friday (Jan 27) at 10am. However the best policy for getting tickets is certainly thru presales which will likely begin on Tuesday.
Red Hot Chili Peppers Put On Hold
Due to a crushed sesamoid bone and a detached flexor tendon in Anthony Kiedis’ foot, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are postponing a portion of their upcoming tour. This means that the January 27 date for the RBC Center has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Tickets from the original date will be honored on the new date.
Van Halen Coming to Greensboro
On Saturday, April 21, a guitarist who can actually play his instrument comes to the area. In support of their upcoming CD due February 7, Van Halen makes its return to Greensboro Coliseum with the same lineup from the 2007 reunion tour: Eddie, Alex, David Lee Roth, and Wolfgang Van Halen.
This will be one of two NC dates, as the band moves on to Charlotte for a show four nights later. While I’m ecstatic that the band has two dates in the state, why would they select Greensboro instead of Raleigh to balance the Charlotte date? Is it because of ticket sales in 2007? As I recall, Raleigh was added to the tour, so by the time we knew about a Raleigh date, we had all traveled to see the band. Additionally, our date was postponed not once, but twice because of Eddie’s treatment, so it’s hard to blame a public for losing confidence that the event will happen. Of course there are other factors (like promoter relationships with venues, the band’s album sales in each MSA, venue size, etc), and there is always the chance a date in between the two gets added, but I’m not betting on it.
No word on ticket sales yet.
