Best Buy Will Open at Brier Creek
Sue Stock has an article in today’s News & Observer about how Brier Creek is finally going to get its Best Buy store (in Alexander Place). It will be one of 45 Best Buy stores opening nationally this year.
Beck’s Cutlery Going Out of Business
The area’s best knife store is going to close. Beck’s Cutlery, in Cary’s MacGregor Village, is running a fantastic sale right now. Problem is that when they close, our options will suffer.

Three Wolf Camera Stores to Close
TBJ is reporting that Ritz Camera, the parent company of Wolf Camera, will close three local stores in their nationwide closure of 300 stores. The stores at North Hills, Cary Town Center, and Southpoint will all close. Ritz filed Chapter 11 in February, and it looks like high-rent locations are getting nixed first.
North Hills East to Get Rotating Theater
A decade ago we saw the American movie theater’s next evolutionary step, stadium seating. The next wave, which promises to make all current theaters obsolete, arrives to Raleigh next year in the North Hills East complex. “Rotheater”, as it’s called, is a new concept where a circular theater rotates around a cylindrical screen. “The concept’s seed was the Carousel of Progress at Disneyworld.,” said Epic Entertainment Tech Director Boyd Schidt. “American’s are tired of static theaters with static screens.”
The concept is sure to take hold quickly given the shortening of Americans’ attention spans. Schidt’s son, a North Hills spokesman (affectionately known as “The Little Schidt”), said this particular installation will feature four separate pie-wedge shaped theaters. Each fourth of the circle will be separate from the other fourths, and will watch one movie on their screen. After 15 minutes the theater will rotate around the stationary screen set. So, each quadrant will watch a different movie for 15 minutes. Patrons stay for two complete rotations. “This way everyone gets to see a little bit of all of the movies we have,” said Schidt.
Crabtree Installs Dangerous Flooring
Crabtree Valley Mall executed a massive renovation about 15 years ago. Apparently the flooring in the Pavilion (food court) was worn, so the mall is replacing it. Unfortunately it is the slickest tile I’ve ever seen in a public place. The flooring is only partially installed, but should be aborted immediately because someone is going to fall and get seriously hurt.
Several years ago we witnessed a fairly old lady falling and breaking her hip in the old North Hills Mall. Her life (and her husband’s life) forever changed, the nice old couple was not litigious, but that was then. Certainly the mall’s risk management consultants (ie. “lawyers”) would agree with me. Be careful out there.
Frances King Moving Out of Cameron Village
The Frances King stationery store is closing the Cameron Village location and moving everything to the North Hills (Alexan) location.
Knockabout Gifts Moves In City Market
Knockabout Gifts has been one of the fun, interesting little stores in City Market. They have completed their move, though, to a bigger space. Look for the awnings on Blake Street, and coming soon on Blount Street.
MINI Coming to Raleigh
Jack Hagel reports in today’s N&O that Flow Automotive (from Winston-Salem) has purchased the former O’Neal Saab dealership on Capital Boulevard, across from Leith Automotive. The article reports that almost half of Flow Mini’s MINI’s customers are from the Triangle.
Yves Delorme Closing
The Yves Delorme store in North Hills is closing. The last day for the store is Saturday, and the remaining stock is being discounted 40%.
Ethan Allen Coming to North Hills
The space that formerly housed Storehouse and a clothing store is being prepared for Ethan Allen’s move. A couple of weeks ago the walls dividing the space were removed; a sure sign that something was afoot with the space. The sign is up now confirming it.
The move is an interesting one as “Glenwood ?North?” has been a hotbed of furniture retailers. The new space is only about 75% the size of the current Glenwood Avenue location, but has excellent viability to upscale shoppers attracted to North Hills.
As a side note: the clothing store located in the southern corner of this space may have had the best clothes around, but did they have any idea how awful their lighting was? Who in the world thinks that metal halide gymnasium lighting makes merchandise, especially clothing, look good? (the same goes for all of you retailers who are switching over to compact fluorescent lighting, by the way)
Epona & Oak Coming To City Market
A specialty boutique is coming to downtown Raleigh’s City Market. Epona & Oak plans to offer “a fresh concept in wellness and shopping. Featuring the lines of independent designers and artists, the boutique carries home accessories, apparel for women and men, jewelry, handbags, gifts and paper goods. Secluded in the back of the store, Epona & Oak features a wellness area that provides a wide array of massage therapies and energy work.”
Péché de Chocolat Moving to Glenwood
This “First Friday” will be the last wine and chocolate tasting for Péche de Chocolat in City Market. On March 1st they are moving 14 Glenwood ave, the Carter building ( map it ).
At tonight’s tasting in City Market, there will be some brand new Péché chocolates that have arrived just in time for Valentine’s Day. Pouring will begin at 7:30pm.
