Widespread Panic Opening Walnut Creek Season

widespread OK, It’s just a bet, but the April 23 (Fri) and April 24 (Sat) Widespread Panic shows scheduled for Walnut Creek are so early in the season, they simply must be the season openers. Right? The last time I saw Widespread was in the basement of the DKE house at Carolina. They were pretty darned good. Maybe one day they’ll amount to something. (whah!).

No word on an opening act, but dude, tickets go on sale to the public on Friday (2/5) at 10am.

R-Line Having Birthday Celebration

20090220-60 Raleigh’s free downtown circulator, the R-Line, will turn 1 year old on Saturday, February 13. To celebrate there will be a party from 6pm to 10pm in front of the Hibernian Restaurant & Pub.

Activities will include a live remote broadcast by G105 and an R-LINE prize wheel featuring over $1,500 in gift cards provided by Downtown Raleigh businesses. Residents and visitors can also stop by to pick up an R-LINE wristband. Many businesses will be offering specials to those wearing the wristband. There also will be a speed dating event on an R-LINE bus to be hosted by PreDating.com. There will be two sessions of the speed dating event. Space on the R-LINE bus for the speed dating activity is limited; participants must register prior to the event by visiting www.PreDating.com.

The City of Raleigh’s Capital Area Transit system offers free rides on the R-LINE seven days a week. A New Way To Leave

IMG_0793 The introduction of hand blow dryers in public restrooms often times introduced no clear way to exit without touching an enteric bacteria-coated door handle. To date the best way to exit the bathroom without smearing someone else’s bacteria on your hands is to use a paper towel to touch the door handle. Golden Corral in Cary has a new approach, the door hook. Using the forearm a person tall enough to reach the hook should now be able to leave the restroom with uncontaminated hands. This is especially important in a restaurant that serves finger foods like fried chicken, rolls, etc.

Of course it is still up to the diner to properly wash their hands. According to the CDC, hands should be washed for the length of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Diners should also assign themselves one hand for touching the dirty food bar serving utensils and one for handling food. However for maximum cleanliness, use a dime-sized dollop of alcohol-based gel of at least 60% concentration (40% gels are worthless) after each trip to the food bar. (CDC Paper, .PDF)

While there are still many routes for disease transmission, it is nice to see a restaurant offering a solution to one of the key sources of sickness.

RDU Terminal 2 Continues Growth

Last year RDU Airport Authority put together a wonderful Open House event to show off the new Terminal 2 (formerly known as Terminal C). Because I finally have my video setup in place, I’m now able to easily present some short video from the open house. The first scene is from the parking garage, where a combo jazz band’s music filled the atrium. Next is a pan of the ticketing area with live piano music. The third scene is from the concourse where all of the Terminal’s restaurants were serving free samples.

In 2011 Phase II of Terminal 2 will open. There will be 16 new retailers, including:

  • Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar
  • Flavours
  • Jason’s Deli
  • North Carolina Vintages
  • Tequileria
  • Five Guys
  • Moe’s Southwest Grill
  • Starbucks
  • 2nd Edition Book Sellers
  • Brighton Collectibles
  • Brooks Brothers
  • CNBC News
  • Hudson News
  • Life is Good/Kids Works
  • PGA Tour Shop
  • Pylones

The RDU website contains a collection of the latest construction updates and renderings for Terminal 2.

2002 Carolina Hurricanes Video Intro

There is a lot of sharing going on these days of the Alaska Nanooks hockey team’s video intro, but I’m still partial to the 2002 intro of the Carolina Hurricanes:

Busy Day at RBC Center

20080321-40 Today is another one of those double-days at the RBC Center. N.C. State will host N.C. Central at 2pm. Then at 7pm the Carolina Hurricanes will host the Chicago Blackhawks. This means that arena crews will have 2 hours to conduct the changeover from basketball to hockey. Oh, did I mention that Governor Perdue has issued a State of Emergency and urges everyone to stay at home due to the state’s taxed highway patrol? "It is going to be very difficult for us to make roads safe and passable,” state Department of Transportation engineer Steve Halsey told WRAL.

As mentioned below, NCSU’s game will be streamed on the internet. The Hurricanes game, however, will be carried on Fox Sports South, so we’ll see how many fans are in the stands as the 23 degree day moves into night.

NCSU/NC Central Headed for Free Stream

According to gopack.com, today’s NC Central at NCSU basketball game will go on as scheduled at 2pm. The site also informs us:

NOTE TO FANS: With the threat of a winter storm this weekend, both teams and the officials will all be in the Raleigh area Friday night, so the game is planned to go on as scheduled.  As a service to NC State fans, the live video broadcast of the game will be available FREE of charge through Pack Pass.

That’s the good news. The bad news is, in typical gopack.com fashion, they offer no links or instructions regarding how to actually start the stream. Most likely the adequate information will appear within an hour at this link, this link or this link. It will be interesting to watch the teams play in a mostly-empty arena.

UPDATE: The kinds folks at gopack.com have alerted me to this link, which will link viewers to the game stream.

The Chemistry Lab Coming to Warehouse District

The warehouse space to the left of The Pit is slated to be a new bar called The Chemistry Lab. They have a website setup as well as a MySpace page, and it appears that the bar will sport a giant dance floor and non-descript, thumping music. They have been seeking a staff, but the only problem is, they still haven’t cleared a Site Plan for the building’s renovation.

Today that Site Plan (.pdf) hit the web. It mainly details egress, ingress, and streetscape improvements. There was previous word that the business would be serving lunch during the day, and the site plan does include outdoor cafe tables in the ally adjacent to The Pit. However, the site plan and website make no mention of food delivery, and the club appears to be a membership club, which usually ties in with a non-food business.
